The first annual Dog Jog 5K/Family Fun Run took place on Saturday, August 27. By all standards, it was a “paws” - itively howling success, sure to wag its way into Huntsville’s heart.
Sponsored by The Early Works Family of Museums,proceeds support educational initiatives at the museum and animal groups throughout the Huntsville community.
A runner herself, Early Works’ Marketing Director Wendy Perkins spent over a year planning the family-friendly event that attracted close to 200 registered athletes and 100 dogs.
"We wanted the entire family to be involved, including the furry members. You can’t bring your dog to most races."
Pet lovers, athletes, vendors, and animal advocacy groups gathered together for a common cause.
Newfoundlands are big, powerful, rescue swimmers. They have a double coat and can get overheated," says Lonnie.
Chewy the Newfoundland weighs in at 145 puppy pounds! Chewy and his owner, Lonnie, travel to all the races, but he rarely runs with his other human – Lonnie’s wife, Abigail. Chewy’s a good cheerleader and a big hairy hunk of love.
Micah and Larsen Brannon founded The Blind Beagle in 2014. Many pets get overlooked due to disabilities like blindness or loss of hearing, cropped ears and missing limbs.
The Blind Beagle sells cool items for canines and humans alike; all proceeds are donated to other organizations that help disabled animals. Some beneficiaries include: Two by Two Rescue in Birmingham, and The Turtle Hospital in Florida.

Helping Paws is a brand new UAH club. Biochemistry/Pre-Med major Amanda Palazzo conceived the idea of the club after an internship at the Humane Society opened her eyes to the surplus of abandoned dogs awaiting adoption.
"I’ve always loved dogs, ever since I was little," says Amanda Palazzo, President, Helping Paws.

Meet Haley and Carol Campbell. The mother/daughter team sews cute clothing and cross body slings for fashion-minded pooches. The business is named after its inspiration – Haley’s best friend –Lil' Bella. Visit their FB page for the latest pooch styles at reasonable prices.
"Haley is intellectually disabled, so it was difficult for her to work a regular job. This is the perfect business. She can sit and sew and work when she feels able," -Carol Campbell.
“It looks like she’s barring her teeth, but that’s a happy smile.”
This 3-year-old Aussie just completed her first run. She was excited to be part of the event.
A New Leash On Life Volunteer Anne Hyde with her friend Willie. Willie is a one-year-old boxer/bulldog mix with a twin brother who answers to Waylon.
In it’s 12th year of operation, A New Leash On Life is a no-kill shelter for all types of animals. The shelter supports 150-200 animals at any given time; foster families house most animals. The average cost for a spayed, neutered, and micro-chipped pet is $200. Dog and Cat Adoptions are held most Saturdays and Sundays at the Jones Valley Petsmart.
